This is quite easily the best thing to happen in radio so far this year. Gilles Peterson invited Radiohead’s Thom Yorke to join him on his Worldwide Radio 1 show, and a phenomenal musical journey ensued. Thom always strikes me as someone quite aloof and a little out of touch perhaps, but this is certainly not the case. I’m not the biggest Radiohead fan in all honesty, I never quite grasped why they were so important, and why I should conform to the status quo of ‘OK Computer’ being the greatest album ever made. More than likely it was my naivety as a youngster; wanting to shun the pseudo-musical intellects. Those that saw themselves on a higher plateau at 13 for loving the Oxfordshire group’s distinct brand of melancholy.
This radio show has gone on to banish any self-perpetuated myths I held about Thom Yorke and whatever tastes he may or may never of had in terms of music (I haven’t really ever thought about it until now). he truly astonished me with his selection, and going back to back with Gilles seamlessly transgressing genres and boundaries, it was a joyous moment. Playing everything from people of the moment Floating Points and Jay Electronica to Blaqstarr and Los Silvertones. With some Trip-Hop and bits and pieces thrown in for good measure. From the conversations in between tracks you get the notion that this is just two good mates flinging records on, testament to their genius.
Gilles is a musical hero of mine, and anyone who knows anything about music in London will be duly aware of the influence and incredible ear he has. If tickets are still available I would make sure you try and get to the Worldwide Awards, his annual event celebrating the best of what he has played over the last year. Floating points are set to perform with the full string-set, with Lee Fields, Theophilus London, Darkstar and numerous others performing it should be incredible. I’ve been wanting to attend the Awards for several years now as a long time listener of the show. This will be my 1st on february the 6th and I can’t wait.
